“For years it’s been about taking a more casual approach to fashion and style, and deconstructing our suiting,” says Las Vegas fashion stylist, Jenna Doughton, who also writes a weekly style column titled Fashion 101. “It’s nice to see the resurgence of a more classic and tailored look. First, we had a sort of ‘geek chic’ and now it is going into a more sophisticated ‘Mad Men’ look, a return to the good old boys club feel.” Nothing sets the pace quite like the suit of the season, awash in gray.
Some designers took the gray trend a bit boxier on the runways, even double breasted with wider pant legs, while others kept it sleek and retro. There are dark grays for evening and paler, softer grays for day. Best of all, the sleek color looks great with any skin tone or hair color.
Though sporting a gray suit is a more traditional look, it’s actually quite accessible, and simple to pull together in a fresh way. “Skinny ties, pointed collars and pops of color are very easy to do with gray,” says Doughton. “This is also a safe palette to try mixing unmatched patterns, especially if you haven’t tried it before. Take a white shirt and pair it with a striped tie and paisley handkerchief. Think vintage with a modern twist. Don’t just pull a tired gray suit from the back of the closet. That’s not going to cut it.”
